Can a DUI Ruin my Career?

We all know that convictions for DUI can have serious penalties imposed by the courts and an effect on your personal life. However, many people may not realize that a DUI conviction can have a significant effect on their careers, as well. While some convicted DUI offenders may experience no professional effects, for others a DUI can be catastrophic for their professional prospects. The following are only some examples of how a DUI conviction can negatively impact a career.

Missing work–DUI cases often require a significant time commitment for various reasons. First, you may spend time in jail after your initial arrest, or if you receive a jail sentence, you obviously will not be able to attend work while imprisoned. Even if you do not spend time in jail, you may have to miss work for several court appearances, meetings with probation officers, substance abuse classes, and more. Many employers may not approve this number of absences, especially if you explain why you are missing work.

Driver’s license suspension–A Colorado DUI conviction will result in a mandatory suspension of your driver’s license for a certain period of time by the DMV. During this time, you may face serious transportation challenges for getting back and forth from work. Furthermore, if your job requires you to have a valid license, you will not be able to perform your duties for the suspension period.

Employment policies–Some companies have employment policies set out in contracts or handbooks that any criminal conviction may be grounds for termination. Additionally, if you do have to find new employment, many employers may ask on job applications whether you have been arrested or convicted of a crime. Companies may also perform background checks on potential employees and a DUI conviction may disqualify you for such positions.

Professional licenses–If you work as a lawyer, doctor, nurse, or in another profession that requires you to hold a professional license in good standing, that license may be in jeopardy if you are convicted of DUI. Most licensing boards require you to inform them of any arrests or convictions and, depending on your criminal history or any past discretions, a DUI case may lead to the suspension or revocation of your professional license.

These are, of course, only some of the ways that a DUI conviction may affect your professional life. The best way to avoid such consequences is to avoid having a DUI conviction on your record in the first place. If you choose to handle your case on your own and plead guilty to the charges against you, you will likely face serious penalties, both from the court and from an employer. However, if you seek the representation of an experienced Denver DUI defense attorney, you stand a good chance of amending the charge against you, limiting the penalties you face, or avoiding conviction altogether.
