This year has a higher percentage of crashes caused by DUI drivers than in 2023. The Colorado Task Force on Drunk and Impaired Driving reports 24.5% of all CSP fatal crashes in 2023 were caused by impaired drivers. 2024 saw an increase to 29.2% caused by impaired drivers. The percentage of impaired fatal crashes increased about 2% in 2024 despite the number of fatal crashes decreasing.

Recommendations to decrease fatalities from DUI accidents include a primary seat belt law. Also, it includes a study of increasing excise fees on alcohol in Colorado to fund additional DUI therapy and victim costs. There is also discussion of repealing or revising Colorado’s 5-nanogram DUI permissible inference law as not scientifically valid. Another recommendation is to create an automated crash report submission for all police agencies in Colorado. This would ensure incident reporting is timely and accurate and includes more data to ensure proper categorization.

The mission of the Colorado Task Force on Drunk and Impaired Driving (CTFDID) is to support prevention, awareness, enforcement, and treatment of impaired driving. The CTFDID partners with public, private, and non-profit organizations in Colorado.
